    he became skilled at creating homespun, refusing to buy british goods which destroyed local economies, gandhi only bought local or rather, handmade his own clothing, as did his wife & disciples. he was a strong proponent of removing poverty in small villages by bringing back their local skills and boycotting expensive imports.

    this idea has been in the works since 2003, 2004.. frequently passing gandhi’s statue in union square in the winter, i was struck by how cold poor gandhi looked.  i know he was a determined man, but still, i hope he might accept a wool hat & scarf if visiting new york in the winter!  at the time i was in grad school at pratt & my hands were full with school work. shortly following graduation i moved to wisconsin for work, every winter i thought of gandhi covered in snow….
